Sustainability
At Meadow Cheese we are aware that sustainable practices are imperative if we are to remain competitive and continue to grow our business long term. We have a responsibility to ensure that we work towards minimising the impact of our business on the environment.
This year we have embarked on an initiative to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. This has been achieved through a combination of reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering energy. Firstly the aim has been to reduce the amount of waste generated from the outset through both efficient stock control management and production processes.
Meadow Cheese works closely with its customers to ensure that our quality and delivery specifications minimise food wastage.
As well as devising mechanisms for the recycling of cardboard, plastic and paper, we work in collaboration with our customer and suppliers on packaging solutions, allowing us to lessen packaging waste altogether. As a result of these initiatives on both food and packaging waste we have managed to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill by 65% compared to last year. The business is working hard to improve even further, with our vision ultimately to no longer send any waste to landfill whatsoever.
Within a food processing environment water is a unavoidable resource. However we are working hard to reduce our water consumption by fully understanding how water comes into our factory and how much goes out as waste. So far this year we have managed to reduce our water consumption by 20%, through initiatives including reuse of hot water used during night cleaning. Further investment is planned to reduce this figure even further.
To ensure our sustainability plan is adopted throughout the business and has maximum effect we have created 'Project Slim', a unique team set up to champion sustainability, drive change and roll out an excellent waste management strategy.
